Bournemouth, 21 October 2025 — Over 130 incredible participants braved the cold and damp conditions on Saturday 18th October 2025 for YMCA Bournemouth’s annual BIG Sleep Easy, a community fundraising event where individuals, teams, and organisations spend a night sleeping rough — so that others don’t have to.
This year’s Sleep Easy took place in the grounds of Diverse Abilities, with participants building makeshift shelters from cardboard boxes and tarpaulins. From simple one-person shelters to impressive group constructions, each structure represented a shared commitment to raising awareness and vital funds for those experiencing homelessness across Bournemouth and the surrounding areas.
As night fell, participants gathered around the open fire to share reflections, stories, and moments of quiet contemplation. Many spoke about the powerful reminder of what life can be like for thousands of people forced to sleep rough every night across the UK. As temperatures dropped to single figures and light rain set in, the spirit of solidarity and empathy only grew stronger.
At dawn, the cardboard shelters were dismantled and recycled — a symbolic act echoing the daily reality faced by those who must pack away temporary shelters each morning to avoid them being removed from public spaces.
Thanks to the compassion and generosity of over 1,000 donors, this year’s event has raised vital funds to support YMCA Bournemouth’s 114 units of short-term accommodation. The money will help provide not only a safe place to stay, but also the personal guidance and support that enables residents to rebuild their lives and move forward with confidence.
Gareth Sherwood, CEO of YMCA Bournemouth, said:
“The BIG Sleep Easy is a humbling reminder of how powerful our community can be when we come together for a shared purpose. Each person who took part gave up their comfort for one night to help ensure that others don’t have to face that reality for real. The funds raised will make a tangible difference — helping us provide shelter, hope and the opportunity for people to build brighter futures. We’re incredibly grateful to every participant, supporter and partner who made this event possible.”
YMCA Bournemouth extends its heartfelt thanks to all who took part, donated, or volunteered — and to the local businesses and organisations who continue to stand alongside the charity in its mission: to enable people to develop their full potential in mind, body and spirit.
